Social Media:
- Reduces isolation and helps people connect,
- It’s a big part of many young people’s lives, and because it offers something valuable, we want to give tools to also navigate around potential harm.
- Can link to negative mental health in young people (Shannon et al., 2022)
- Can increase body dissatisfaction, a risk factor for eating disorders (Jiotsa et al., 2021)
- Platforms are NOT prioritizing young users’ health. For example:
- Per The Wall Street Journal, Meta admitted to knowing their platform was “addictive”, spread “misinformation”, and worsened body image for one in three teen girls.
- Per 60 Minutes, around 1,200 families are suing platforms, claiming addiction and mental health harm to their children/young people.
Social media LITERACY:
- Provides awareness and critical thinking skills so young people can challenge what they see online.
- Tends to create more peace of mind for those who support them.
This online research-based social media literacy program has five (5) modules with videos and a workbook:
- LOVE YOURSELFIE: Promote real versus “ideal” body image.
- EXPLORE YOURSELFIE: Enhance self-awareness.
- HELP YOURSELFIE: Reduce perfectionism and increase self-compassion.
- BE YOURSELFIE: Engage in social media literacy.
- CHERISH YOURSELFIE: Encourage positive actions and embrace optimism.
Two (2) formats to choose from:
- One (1) one-hour workshop, offering abbreviated versions of all five (5) modules
- Five (5) 45-minute workshops (1 per module) at regular intervals (e.g., daily or weekly)
HTLYS is developed as a prevention program to provide additional support to those who are looking for support and education around positive body image, self-esteem, and social media literacy. This program is intended to support and aid in cultivating positive and reflective conversations around body image. This program is not intended to be used in lieu of eating disorder treatment with a medical, clinical, and/or nutritional provider.
Follow up with your pediatrician or primary care doctor if you have concerns about eating disorder symptoms or treatment.
